CRO audit: find out why visitors do not become customers

With a CRO audit, also called a conversion audit, you have someone investigate why visitors to your website do not become customers. Dimitry reviews your site for tracking, speed, forms, mobile, trust and copy. You get an overview of improvements ranked by impact and effort, so you know what to tackle first. You deal with Dimitry, who also does the research himself.

What is a CRO audit?

CRO stands for conversion rate optimisation. A CRO audit is the research that comes before it: a one-off review of your website, focused on one question. Why do visitors not do what you hope, such as call, request a quote, book or order?

The answer rarely lies in one big problem. Usually it is a build-up of small hurdles: a page that loads slowly on mobile, a form with too many fields, a button that does not stand out or copy that does not say what you charge. A website conversion audit lists those hurdles, backed up by what you measure and by our own walk-through of your site.

The result is not a thick report full of jargon, but an overview you can actually use: what can be improved, why, and in what order.

What the CRO audit examines

The audit follows a visitor's route, from the first page to the enquiry or order. These are the areas we review.

  • Measurement and tracking

Without reliable figures, every conclusion is a guess. We check whether your analytics is set up correctly and whether forms, clicks on your phone number and orders are actually being measured.

  • The route to an enquiry

Which pages do visitors arrive on, where do they go and at which step do they drop off? That shows you where in the funnel the biggest leaks are.

  • Speed

A slow page loses visitors before they have seen anything. We measure the loading time, especially on mobile, and look for what is holding the site up.

  • Forms

Which fields are really needed, are error messages clear and is the form easy to fill in on a phone?

  • Mobile

Is everything readable on a small screen, are buttons big enough and can you call or message with one tap?

  • Trust

Are your contact details, real photos, reviews and prices in the place where a visitor hesitates?

  • Copy and offer

Does a visitor understand within a few seconds what you do, for whom and what it costs?

  • Buttons and next steps

Does a visitor know on every page what they can do next, and does your main button stand out?

Getting a CRO audit: how it works

At every step you deal with the same person: Dimitry. He does the research and goes through the results with you.

  1. 01

    Quickscan and short call

You start with the free quickscan, which also gives your website a score for conversion. In a short call you explain what your website should deliver and what problems you are running into.

  2. 02

    Checking the tracking

We check whether the figures are correct. If an enquiry or order is not being measured properly, that is the first thing you hear, because everything else depends on it.

  3. 03

    Research

Using your figures and our own walk-through of your site, on phone and laptop, we look for where visitors drop off and why.

  4. 04

    Improvements in order of priority

You get an overview of what can be improved, ranked by expected impact and effort. Quick wins first, bigger changes after.

  5. 05

    Review

Dimitry goes through the results with you and answers your questions. After that, you decide yourself what to do with them.

What you receive after the CRO audit

After the audit you know where your website is losing visitors and what you can do about it. Every point is explained in plain language, so you can pass it on to your web developer or pick it up yourself.

Among other things, you receive:

  • An overview of the hurdles holding visitors back, per page or step.
  • Improvements ranked by impact and effort: what is quick to do and delivers a lot is at the top.
  • A check of your tracking, so you can see what each change does afterwards.
  • A personal review with Dimitry of the results and the next step.

When a CRO audit makes sense

A CRO audit pays off mainly when visitors are already coming to your website, but they deliver too little.

Then the gain is not in more traffic, but in a site that works better. Every improvement also makes the visitors from SEO and Google Ads worth more.

An example calculation, not a promise: if your website delivers 40 enquiries from 2,000 visitors a month, and that becomes 50 because you remove a few hurdles, you have 10 more enquiries a month without any extra advertising budget.

A CRO audit is a good step if:

  • You get visitors, but few enquiries, bookings or orders.
  • You advertise on Google and have the feeling your budget is leaking away.
  • You want to know what to improve first, before you invest in a new website.
  • You are not sure whether your enquiries and sales are being measured properly.

How much does a CRO audit cost?

The price of a CRO audit is on request. How much work it is depends on the size of your website, the number of steps to an enquiry or order and whether your tracking is already set up correctly. After the quickscan and a short call you receive a fixed price, so you know in advance where you stand.

If you have few visitors, findability often comes first, and an SEO audit for €199 is a better fit. If your site is so outdated that individual improvements help little, having a new website designed may be smarter. You will hear that honestly after the quickscan. All other prices are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions about CRO audit

What is a CRO audit?

A CRO audit is a one-off investigation into why visitors to your website do not become customers. Your tracking, the route to an enquiry, speed, forms, mobile, trust and copy are all reviewed. You get an overview of improvements ranked by impact and effort, so you know where to start to get more enquiries or sales from the same visitors.

What is the difference between a CRO audit and conversion rate optimisation?

The CRO audit is the research: you see what can be improved and in what order. Conversion rate optimisation is the ongoing work after that: implementing improvements, measuring the effect and testing where possible. You can have the audit done on its own and pick up the points yourself or with your web developer, or leave the implementation to Growetic afterwards.

What is the difference between a CRO audit and an SEO audit?

An SEO audit looks at how well Google finds and understands your website: technical health, content, links and competitors. A CRO audit looks at what visitors do once they are on your site, and why they drop off. So the SEO audit is about more visitors, the CRO audit about more customers from the visitors you already have.

How much does it cost to have a CRO audit done?

The price is on request, because the work depends on the size of your website, the number of steps to an enquiry or order and whether your tracking is already set up correctly. After the free quickscan and a short call with Dimitry, you receive a fixed price. That way you know in advance what it costs before you agree to anything.

Do I have enough visitors for a CRO audit?

An audit needs figures to say anything, but not necessarily a lot. With few visitors, the focus is more on our own walk-through of your site and the obvious hurdles, such as an awkward form or a slow page. If hardly anyone visits your website, findability is usually the first step. You will hear that honestly after the quickscan.

Do you also implement the improvements from the audit?

We can, but you do not have to use us. The improvements are explained in a way that lets you pick them up yourself or with your web developer. If you want Growetic to do it, that is possible through conversion rate optimisation. You decide which changes are implemented, and you hear in advance what it costs.
